Why Come to Church? |
In the 21st Century only 7% of the population of the UK go to Church and yet so many people are seeking answers to their spiritual questions and feeling something missing from their lives. Here is the testimony of one member of our congregation.
Stephen's story
"For most of my life I have not been a spiritual person. Like a lot of people, I hesitantly called myself a Christian, as my parents had me christened as a baby and I occasionally went to Midnight Mass at Christmas. I always felt far too busy with the pursuit of obtaining an education, forming and maintaining relationships and developing my career to give my faith in Christ much more than a fleeting thought. It wasn't until I began to experience the love, truth and wisdom of Jesus through developing a relationship with my partner and her family that I saw the power of Christ at work. I saw and experienced a joy and purpose in my life which had, until that point, evaded me. This realisation, after months of deliberation, eventually led me to walk through the doors at St. John's, Erith on an autumnal Sunday morning, and begin to worship.
"I wasn't really sure why I wanted to go there, aside from it being the Church that my family used for its weddings, christenings and burials, but I knew that occasionally reading the Bible wasn't enough to satisfy my spiritual growth. I found St. John's to be a beautiful ancient Church with a warm and welcoming congregation who over the course of the year have gently and sensitively helped me to develop and investigate my faith. I enjoy the new perspective that my faith has brought me and look forward to growing with my family at St. John's, Erith."
